Seminar Overview

Learn how specifications are used for aviation fuel quality control, and why they affect product performance and availability. This class emphasizes practical applications, highlighting past and current problems in a participatory atmosphere. Methods of testing and manufacturing aviation fuels, and transportation systems, are explained and demonstrated (were feasible). Interaction of aviation fuels and with aircraft engines and group equipment is stressed. Fee per person: $995.

Provider: ASTM (American Society for Testing & Materials) $995

WHAT YOU WILL LEARN
This class focuses on how specifications are used to control the quality of aviation fuels, and why they affect product performance and availability. It emphasizes practical applications, and ASTM's role in developing specifications and methods, while high-lighting past and current problems in a participatory atmosphere.

Methods of testing and manufacturing aviation fuels and transportation systems are explained and demonstrated. Interaction of fuels with aircraft engines and ground equipment is also stressed.

Sponsor Background:
ASTM, celebrated it's 100th anniversary in 1998, is one of the world's largest voluntary standards development organizations. ASTM standards have grown to be among the world's most widely used and accepted documents. The 81-volume Annual Book of ASTM Standards contains over 12,000 standards written by 34,000 members on our 140 technical committees. These standards and related information are widely used throughout the world as the basis of purchasing and other contracts, codes, laws and regulations. ASTM Committee D-2 on Petroleum Products and Lubricants developed the standard used in this course.

Instructor(s):
Kurt Strauss

Instructor Background:
Kurt Strauss, a petroleum fuel engineering consultant, has been involved in research and technical service on aviation fuels for over 40 years. In 1982, he retired from the Texaco Research Dept. as its aviation fuel technical expert, responsible for all aviation fuel specifications and quality control procedures. Strauss originated this course and has taught it all over the world since 1986.

He has been an active ASTM member since 1973, and is currently 2nd vice-chairman of Committee D-2 on Petroleum Products and Lubricants. He also the Jet Fuel Spec. Section of Sub. J. In addition to being a Fellow of ASTM, he has received the Lowrie B. Sargent Medal for Outstanding Leadership and the Petroleum Committee Award for Achievement.

Strauss has written an encyclopedia article, a handbook chapter, and over 25 technical papers on aviation fuels. Strauss has a B.S. in mechanical engineering from the University of Connecticut.
