Instructor Background:

Brian L. Karnofsky - President

Mr. Karnofsky has over 25 years of experience in environmental consulting and training. He founded Environmental Resource Center in 1981 with the goal of providing superior environmental consulting and training services to industry, academia, and government.

Mr. Karnofsky has managed both large and small projects for several major corporations and government agencies. He has conducted numerous environmental audits for clients throughout the US. He has developed and presented seminars nationwide on the requirements of EPA, DOT and OSHA.

He is the author of Chemical Information Resource Handbook (NTIS, 1979), editor of Handbook for the Management of Hazardous Waste (Van Nostrand Reinhold, 1992; 2nd Ed. John Wiley, 1996), and co-author of Hazardous Materials Management: Compliance with the New DOT Requirements (Van Nostrand Reinhold, 1993). He is a frequent speaker at corporate environmental managers' conferences and he has presented papers on hazardous waste management compliance and technologies.

Mr. Karnofsky is a nationally recognized expert in the federal and state hazardous waste regulations. He is in constant demand for his expertise by many of the country's largest companies, including General Electric, Exxon, Fisher Scientific, Air Products, 3M, Philips, Alcoa, Corning, Cooper Industries, Federal Mogul, Entergy, First Energy, Motorola, Gates, John Deere, Goodrich, Schering Plough, Occidental Chemical, Volvo, Enpro, Koch, the US Army & Air Force, Veterans Administration, and many others.

Mr. Karnofsky holds a Master's degree in Environmental Systems Management from American University in Washington, DC, and a Bachelor's degree in Conservation and Resource Development from the University of Maryland. He is also a member of Pi Alpha Alpha (Public Administration Honor Society).

Kristie Cook Absher - Senior Consultant

Ms. Absher has more than 10 years of experience in the field of environmental health and safety and training. She developed an interest in the field while working at Brookhaven National Laboratory and R.J. Reynolds during college. Training is Ms. Absher's favorite aspect of her job. Additionally, Ms. Absher is experienced in hazard classification for transportation, writing hazardous material security plans, and performing transportation audits. In previous positions at IMC Agribusiness and Nash Community College, she has conducted various types of training, including new employee and safety training, performed inspections, managed MSDSs, and assisted with numerous environmental health and safety projects, such as Form R completion and job safety analysis development.

Ms. Absher holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Multidisciplinary Studies from North Carolina State University. Her technical specialties include Hazardous Materials Transportation (DOT), Dangerous Goods Transportation (IATA, IMO), Title III Reporting (SARA), and Hazard Communication (OSHA).

Harry L. Favre - Consultant

Mr. Favre has more than 20 years experience in environmental, health and safety (EHS) management at manufacturing and chemical companies throughout the United States. He has been responsible for facility compliance with EPA, OSHA and DOT regulations. In addition, he has developed and implemented environmental management systems, including ISO 14001.

Mr. Favre holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Chemistry and a Master of Arts degree in Education from The Ohio State University. In addition, he is a Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM) and a Certified Environmental Trainer (CET). His technical specialties include Environmental Compliance (RCRA, EPCRA, TSCA), Hazardous Materials Transportation (DOT/IATA), Hazardous Waste Operations (OSHA), Hazard Communication and MSDS Development (OSHA) and Environmental Management Systems, including ISO 14001. Mr. Favre has been developing and presenting EHS training programs for over 20 years.

Barry O. Gillespie - Senior Consultant

Mr. Gillespie has over 15 years of diversified "real world" regulatory compliance experience, specializing in environmental and DOT requirements. He gained this experience while working in a variety of industries- automotive, airline, and waste disposal. This unique blend of experience allowed him the opportunity to manage the chemicals while they were classified as Hazardous Chemicals, Toxic Chemicals, Hazardous Materials, Hazardous Substances, and Hazardous Waste. By working at several treatment, storage, and disposal facilities, he was also able to gain first-hand experience in different methods of waste treatment and disposal.

In addition to maintaining regulatory compliance, Mr. Gillespie has trained others in regulatory compliance. He has developed and conducted site-specific training programs on the following topics: hazardous waste management, hazardous materials handling, pollution prevention, and alternative methods of disposal and transportation. Mr. Gillespie has also conducted training courses related to solid and medical waste management, waste minimization, EPCRA compliance, ISO 14001 awareness and audits, and TSCA (asbestos and PCB) regulatory compliance.

Mr. Gillespie earned his degree in chemical engineering from North Carolina State University. His technical specialties include Environmental Compliance (RCRA, TSCA, and EPCRA), Permit Writing, Pollution Prevention / Waste Minimization, and Treatment, and Disposal Technologies.

Erwin C. Gutzwiller - MPH, CHMM, Senior Consultant

Mr. Gutzwiller is an experienced HAZWOPER and OSHA general industry instructor and auditor. He has experience as a nuclear weapons analyst, patient administrator, safety officer, hospital administrator, and accident investigator.

His experience includes academic, industrial, and consulting services for a wide variety of organizations, ranging from nuclear power facilities to spill response operations. He is also knowledgeable in the field of nuclear, chemical, and biological weapons. Mr. Gutzwiller is a published author in peer-reviewed publications and has been a speaker for international conferences and seminars.

Mr. Gutzwiller earned a M.P.H. in Public Health Leadership/Environmental Science and Engineering from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and he holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Allied Health Administration from the University of Alabama at Birmingham. His technical specialties include Industrial Safety (OSHA), Hazardous Waste Operations (OSHA), and Incident Command (OSHA, FEMA).

Pretlo V. Knight - Senior Consultant

Ms. Knight has more than 16 years of experience in environmental and safety management. She has served as a waste transportation and disposal manager and as a health and safety manager. She has been responsible for RCRA, DOT and OSHA compliance and SARA Title III reporting. Ms. Knight has developed RCRA, Haz Com, HAZWOPER, and DOT training programs, as well as public awareness seminars.

Ms. Knight holds a Master of Science degree in biology from North Carolina A&T State University, and a Bachelor of Science degree in biology from Elizabeth City State University. Ms. Knight's technical specialties include Hazardous Waste Management (RCRA), Advanced Hazardous Waste Management, Hazardous Waste Operations (OSHA), Hazardous Materials Transportation (DOT), Industrial Safety (OSHA), and Title III reporting (SARA). She has developed and delivered hundreds of training classes and workshops throughout the United States on topics such as shipping infections substances per DOT and IATA regulations, hazardous waste sampling, and land disposal restrictions.

Lara Pilon - Consultant

Ms. Pilon has more than eight years of experience in the field of environmental compliance, employee health, and safety management. Her experience includes management of employee health programs and environmental and safety compliance within the analytical laboratory industry. In this capacity, she was responsible for RCRA, DOT, and OSHA compliance. Ms. Pilon has developed programs and conducted training in the areas of RCRA, HAZWOPER, Respiratory Protection, Bloodborne Pathogens, and OSHA’s Laboratory Standard.

Ms. Pilon holds a Bachelor of Science degree in occupational safety and industrial hygiene management from Millersville University in Pennsylvania. Ms. Pilon’s technical specialties include Hazardous Waste Management (RCRA) and Hazardous Materials Transportation (DOT).

Darryl Shaver - Consultant

Mr. Shaver has 12 years of experience managing environmental and safety programs and consulting for regulatory compliance. Mr. Shaver has developed and conducted general and client-specific training programs covering EPCRA reporting and effective EHS management. He has provided EHS management services to clients for hazardous waste program management, air permitting, wastewater permitting, wastewater sampling, MSDS development, SPCC plan development, and environmental reporting such as Tier II reports and Form R reports. Additionally, Mr. Shaver has conducted safety audits for facilities in various industries.

Mr. Shaver holds a Master of Arts degree in Intercultural Ministries from Assemblies of God Theological Seminary, and a Bachelor of Arts in history from Pfeiffer College. His technical specialties include Hazardous Waste Management (RCRA), Hazardous Materials Transportation (DOT), MSDS development, SPCC plan development, and EHS management.

Andy Smith - Consultant

Mr. Smith has been in the field of regulatory compliance and manufacturing operations since 1988. His career began in the Naval Nuclear Power Program as a chemist and radiological technician. Following that, he worked in diverse manufacturing environments, including metal-working/electroplating, snack food production, and semiconductor manufacturing. He has conducted regulatory compliance workshops and managed the regulatory training department for a national waste broker and TSDF.

Mr. Smith has presented nationwide workshops covering both federal and state regulations. He has taught IATA/IMDG, Stormwater, basic RCRA, advanced RCRA, Texas and California state regulations, and how to incorporate DOT and OSHA requirements in the management of chemicals and waste in an industrial facility. He has developed several training courses, video conference presentations, and web-based training programs.

Mr. Smith studied business administration at Texas Tech, and attended the Naval Nuclear Power School for Chemistry and Radiological Controls. His technical specialties include International Air Transport Association (IATA) regulations, Hazardous Waste Management (RCRA), and Hazardous Materials Transportation (DOT).

Rebecca Spaulding - Senior Consultant

As a senior consultant with Environmental Resource Center, Ms. Spaulding provides hazardous materials/dangerous goods transportation compliance assistance (DOT/IATA/IMO) for many different industries. For the past 9 years she has provided hazardous materials and dangerous goods training, consulting, and auditing services to numerous clients in various industries.

Ms. Spaulding earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Environmental Geoscience and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Spanish from Boston College. Her technical specialties include Hazardous Materials Transportation (DOT), Dangerous Goods Transportation (IATA, IMO, ADR). Additionally, she has customized and specialized training seminars in Spanish and English to meet the compliance requirements under DOT, IATA, IMO, focusing on shipments of infectious substances, radioactives, explosives, for motor carriers, rail shipments, and shipments by ground within Europe (ADR).
