Keywords: computer, computers, computer training, network, networks, networking, LAN, WAN. Fee per person: $895.

Provider: CompuMaster $895
Topic(s): Computers & Software > Data Communications

Who Should Attend?
Those who want to learn how to manage the real-world network situations their routers will encounter

Detailed Overview/Outline

Two days of hands-on training in configuring and maintaining Cisco routers in multiprotocol networks

You'll Learn…

  • The two types of routers – static and dynamic
  • Cisco's Internetwork Operating System® software
  • How to complete a manual router configuration
  • How to configure routers for each type of network protocol
  • The ins and outs of the AppleTalk protocol
  • What you need to know about IPX addressing system, IPX protocol stack and IPX frame types and configuration

Workshop Agenda
Day One: 8 a.m. – 5 p.m.

Session 1 - Networking Overview

In this session, you’ll learn about the evolution of networks and protocols and explore the work of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) that developed the OSI reference model. You’ll learn:

  • The history of networks and how networks have evolved
  • The OSI reference model
  • The differences among the various network layers:
  • – Network layer protocols
  • – Data link layer
  • – Upper layer
  • The ins and outs of Internetworking devices

Session 2 - Router Basics

In this session, you’ll do extensive hands-on lab work and begin to use Cisco® routers to build a multiprotocol network in the classroom. You’ll see firsthand how the classroom network reconfigures itself when one router goes off-line. You’ll also learn:

  • The primary hardware components in routers
  • The two types of routers—static and dynamic
  • Cisco’s Internetwork Operating System® software
  • Cisco router’s initial configuration
  • How to complete a manual router configuration
  • How to configure routers for each type of network protocol
  • The steps to take in prioritizing protocols

Day Two: 8 a.m. – 5 p.m.

Session 3 - TCP/IP Interconnectivity

This session covers the protocol that WAN and Internetworking managers use most—TCP/IP. As the Internet forces its way into every corporate computing environment, it’s becoming increasingly important for network administrators and users to broaden their knowledge of TCP/IP. In this session, you’ll become well-grounded in TCP/IP concepts through four different labs that provide real networking experience using IP protocols. You’ll learn about TCP/IP and why it’s become the protocol of the Internet, including:

  • IP addressing
  • Using subnets and subnet masks
  • IP configuration commands
  • IP Host Tables
  • Transport layer
  • TCP segment
  • UDP segment
  • Network layer

Session 4 - Novell®/IPX™ Configuration

One the most common LAN OSs used today is Novell’s NetWare®. In this session, you’ll get an overview of the protocols common to the Novell environment and learn how to connect Novell networks to the other networks in your WAN. Explore the protocol of Novell networks (IPX) and why it’s one of the most popular LAN protocols used today. You’ll gain a thorough understanding of:

  • IPX addressing system
  • IPX protocol stack
  • IPX frame types and configuration

Session 5 - Configuring Other Network Protocols

Whether it’s AppleTalk® or DECnet™, you’ll get a sampling of the other protocol and network options available to network users. In this session, you’ll learn:

  • The ins and outs of the AppleTalk protocol, including:
  • – AppleTalk protocol stack
  • – Addressing
  • – Configuration
  • – Services
  • – How zones are used to subnet an AppleTalk network
  • Banyan® VINES® and DECnet protocols, including:
  • – Understanding their protocol stacks
  • – Configuration and monitoring

Session 6 - Wide Area Networks and Bridging

ISDN service is fast becoming an affordable connection alternative for more and more organizations—and even individuals. In this session, learn all you need to know to take advantage of this exciting new service. You’ll learn how to connect two remote sites via ISDN. Plus, you’ll discover how to connect two dissimilar networks using a bridge.

  • ISDN
  • – Equipment configurations
  • – Demand routing
  • – Monitoring
  • X.25 network basics
  • – Protocol stack
  • – Configuration
  • – Virtual circuits
  • – Monitoring
  • Bridging
  • – Bridging basics
  • – Forward and filtering frames
  • – Source-route bridging

HANDS-ON LABS

Why Choose CompuMaster?

Since its start, SkillPath has grown from holding just 82 seminars in 1989 to conducting more than 12,000 seminars each year. This growth was recognized in 1994, as SkillPath was placed number 32 on Inc. Magazine's annual listing of the 500 fastest-growing privately held companies in America. In 1995, SkillPath joined forces with Graceland College, a nationally recognized, private, undergraduate institution. For both SkillPath and Graceland, this partnership makes possible a long-sought objective: the potential for many to experience the joy and benefits obtained through lifelong learning and professional development.

Even with this exceptional growth, one original goal remains unchanged-- our attention to high quality. We're so committed to achieving this goal that we offer a guarantee: you'll be satisfied with the quality of the training you receive, or you don't pay. It's that simple, and that's how we maintain the highest satisfaction rating in the industry. We invite you to try one of our seminars and experience the SkillPath difference!
