Detailed Overview/Outline

The number of electric motors/generators/actuators in automotive, aerospace, marine, industrial, and home applications are increasing rapidly. The automotive industry needs advanced electric motors/generators for propulsion (for ICE, hybrid electric, electric, and fuel cell vehicles) and for auxiliary motors for new application areas, such as electrically assisted power steering, drive-by-wire and brake-by-wire, etc. The customer's demand for safety, comfort, economy, clean environment and quality of driving is another reason for explosive growth in electric machines of automotive electrical systems.

This seminar will provide extensive details on design and analysis of electric motors/generators/actuators using state-of-the-art techniques. Fundamentals of electromagnetism and basic electric machine equations will be presented along with examples. Three different electric machine topologies, including permanent magnet, induction, and switched reluctance, will be discussed with their pros and cons. Attendees will develop skills to assess the advantages and disadvantages of competing topologies to satisfy customer's requirements. The class will also discuss new trends in automotive electrical systems and learn how the growing demand for on-board power is impacting power generation and management and forcing the redesign of many under-the-hood functions.

Benefits of Attending
By attending this seminar, you will:

  • Enhance your ability to design and analyze electric machines by learning state-of-the-art modeling and simulation techniques
  • Improve effectiveness of design and analysis processes by learning critical mathematical equations and methodologies for current and new electric machine product development
  • Expand your knowledge on induction, permanent magnet, switched reluctance motors/generators, applications, and industrial trends for future products
  • Gain valuable information to make an appropriate assessment for the new product planning and electric machine topology selection
  • Explore new opportunities using different electric machines to win new customers and increase market share

Who Should Attend

  • Engineers responsible for the design and analysis of electric motors/generators and want to stay abreast of the latest technologies
  • Engineers involved with electric motor/generator product development activities
  • Engineers who want to make a big contribution to current and future electric machine products
  • Product and process development engineers who need a better understanding of permanent magnet motors/generators
  • Managers who need information to make technical decisions

Prerequisites
An engineering degree in any discipline is sufficient to obtain full benefits from this seminar. Previous background or basic knowledge of electromagnetic applications would be helpful but is not required. Attendees are encouraged to bring specific problems to discuss in class.

Sponsor Background:
About SAE

What do cars, aircraft, trucks, off-highway equipment, engines, materials, manufacturing, and fuels have in common? SAE. The Society of Automotive Engineers is your one-stop resource for technical information and expertise used in designing, building, maintaining, and operating self-propelled vehicles for use on land or sea, in air or space.

Who we are & what we do

Nearly 80,000 engineers, business executives, educators, and students from more than 97 countries form our network of members who share information and exchange ideas for advancing the engineering of mobility systems. More than 16,000 volunteer leaders serve on our Board of Directors and our many other boards, councils and committees. Our technical committees write more new aerospace and automotive engineering standards than any other standards-writing organization in the world. We publish thousands of technical papers and books each year, and leading-edge periodicals and Internet and CD-ROM products too. Our Cooperative Research Program helps facilitate projects that benefit the mobility industry as a whole. Numerous meetings and expositions provide worldwide opportunities to network and share information. We also offer a full complement of professional development activities such as seminars, workshops, and continuing education programs. The meetings and activities of local sections provide an opportunity to network with colleagues near you.

Services for the public and the profession

Every day, we demonstrate our commitment to society through local, national, and international public awareness programs that promote vehicle safety and maintenance and energy resource conservation. Through the SAE Foundation, we are also deeply involved in the engineering-related education of children, teachers , college students, and faculty. Industry and faculty awards provide recognition to outstanding contributors in the profession.

Since its founding in 1905, SAE's dedicated people, strong technical base, and vision have helped serve the professional needs of engineers and the transportation needs of humanity. We are clearly poised to continue that role into the 21st century.
