Like many of today’s “Star Assistants,” you are savvy, experienced and continually looking for new challenges that can hone your skills and boost your value in the workplace. Our Forum will guide you on the most effective ways to advance your career by:

1. encouraging self-assessment – replacing outdated attitudes, beliefs and actions with the latest administrative best practices, and

2. building upon the solid foundation you’ve already established as a consummate assistant who partners with management, promotes teamwork and helps boost the bottom line.

Event of Distinction

Our 2008 Forum promises to be one of the best ever! Here’s why:

  • You and your professional development are the sole focus of our Forum, and you’re sure to see that in everything we do – from our talented corps of Office Dynamics trainers to the many engaging programs we offer.

Many of our attendees hail from the world’s most prestigious businesses and organizations. (For a complete list, see Top 10 Reasons to Attend our 2007 Forum.)
  • You’ll meet and learn from Joan Burge herself – one of the first advocates for the administrative profession, a renowned expert and author in our field and a bona fide success story who worked her way up from receptionist to becoming CEO of her own company!

Our Welcome Reception will be held by the pool terrace (weather permitting) on the 3rd floor overlooking the dazzling San Diego city lights. Casual dress – nautical look is encouraged!

Group Dinner (Wednesday) – TBA

Night of the Stars theme (Optional event, cost to be determined) There are numerous choices for our group event and big Forum celebration. We hope to have our plans confirmed by April 15. We will e-mail all current registrants an invitation to sign up. We’re asking everyone to wear some type of star item for this special event whether it’s a blouse with stars or star pin. It’s our night to celebrate you and our joint accomplishments.

PLEASE NOTE: You must sign up for the Group Dinner before the Forum. We cannot accept any last-minute sign ups.

Teambuilding Scavenger Hunt (Thursday)

Team development is crucial in today’s busy workplace environment. It’s not enough to just talk about working together; you need to experience it! This unique segment will be held during the actual Forum on Thursday from 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.

This specially-planned event is being coordinated by a company that specializes in team scavenger hunts. The hunt will be high energy, interactive and customized to our group’s needs. It will focus on team bonding, problem solving and time management. Creative photography plays a big role in the adventure. Each team will be given a camera to take photographs throughout the hunt.

Each team will be accompanied by a trained event team leader (your captain) who will help keep score, keep your team on the right track and ensure that everyone is having fun and no one is left behind. Pizza and soft drinks for lunch will be provided at a fun downtown restaurant. Following the hunt, we will hold an upbeat Awards ceremony for outstanding individual players and overall winning team.

Bring your tennis shoes and creativity!

15th Year Forum Anniversary (Thursday)

We are celebrating our Forum’s 15th year Anniversary and we want you to help us celebrate. When Joan held her first Forum, she had no intent of making it an annual event. She just wanted to gather some Admins from various companies in one place to share best practices. The first Forum was held in Lansing, MI (where Joan lived at the time) and had only 16 attendees, but they represented 6 major organizations including SC Johnson. It was that original group that encouraged Joan to make this an annual event, which has now grown to 150+ attendees representing 55 organizations!

Issues and Best Practices (Friday) -- An Office Dynamics’ Exclusive!

Spirited group discussions on topics and issues that are of interest to attendees will be the focal point of this session. We are the only administrative-related event offering an “Issues and Best Practices” session where real-life situations and problems affecting you and your peers can be explored in depth and solved creatively by attendees. Note: Participants are invited to send issues of interest in advance to Joan Burge.

Joan’s Trademark ‘Surprises’!

Forum attendees know that Joan Burge, Forum Creator, always has a surprise or two waiting for her guests! It’s part of what keeps the Forum experience fresh, fun and lively. That includes her grand team-building activity. So be ready for anything – and make the most of every moment.

Sailing Back in Time

In 1999, Hurricane Floyd came down upon Virginia Beach, the first day of our Office Dynamics’ Forum and a state of emergency was in effect for Hampton Roads. Fortunately, our attendees were safe and applied Joan’s STAR® approach to make this a successful event in spite of no electricity for an entire day. This was also a year when everyone was focused on the New Millennium and what it would bring. Our administrative attendees forecasted the future on paper which has been safely kept in a Time Capsule. We are excited to unveil their vision on the administrative profession as well as other surprises at this year’s Forum.

Peer Networking

You will have several opportunities during the Forum to network, including the Group Dinner, lunches, and breaks. Because we limit our event to no more than 200 attendees, you really have an opportunity to make some new friendships that will, hopefully, carry on throughout the year.

Workplace Tools

Continue your learning beyond the Forum. Office Dynamics books, DVDs, and CDs will be available for purchase in limited quantities at the Forum. We accept Visa and Mastercard as well as personal checks. You can also place your order with us and we will gladly ship your items to you when we get back to Las Vegas. View our products online.

Extend Your Visit

The hotel is 5 short blocks from the Horton Plaza Shopping and Entertainment Complex, as well as the Gaslamp Quarter, featuring more than 80 restaurants and lounges. And just minutes away are major attractions such as San Diego Zoo, Sea World, Old Town, Seaport Village, and the USS Midway and miles of pristine beaches.

Other main attractions include: Seaport Village, Broadway Flying Horses Carousel, Broadway Pier, Maritime Museum, Balboa Park and more than we could ever mention here. We highly suggest you take a water taxi to Coronado Island where the main draw is the Hotel del Coronado.

Dynamic Speakers and Seaworthy Topics

Realizing Your Full Potential: Venturing Into High Seas

By Joan Burge, Founder & CEO, Office Dynamics

In life, we are either adventurers riding the high seas or drifters just floating along. One is not better than the other; we need to just “float” sometimes and enjoy the scenery. Riding the high seas is where we really have an opportunity to grow. That is because the adventurer will

  • reach out to people they normally would not
  • use their creativity and be resourceful
  • notice things they don’t see in calm waters
  • “muster up” every bit of strength
  • be invigorated – come alive
  • and display courage

High seas can come in the form of

  • changes at work
  • dealing with personal challenges and trying to balance work
  • taking on a major assignment or project
  • an exciting new administrative position
  • picking up your family and moving to a new place
  • leaving the administrative profession after many years

In Joan’s dynamic opening keynote, she will share with you how to use the STAR® approach to Realize Your Full Potential!

Sailing True - Hoisting the Sales of Personal Focus

By Lisa Olsen, Office Dynamics West Coast Speaker / Trainer

Unlike cruising on a luxury liner, sailing is the complex art of controlling a sailing vessel and it requires focus and the ability to read the winds. Experienced sailors understand how to manage the forces of the wind on the sails in order to change direction and speed. They know the value of “centering of effort” – the point at which all the forces acting on the sails are concentrated. Sailing experts utilize many “aids to navigation,” fixed objects that they use to navigate their position. These can be buoys, lighthouses, sea markers or even land.

Success minded administrative professionals have the same challenges. Sailing true in today’s fast-paced corporate environment requires dedicated focus. Your boss and your company depend on your navigation expertise to gauge the winds and react accordingly, with confidence and diplomacy using essential critical thinking skills.

In this dynamic presentation, we will hoist the sails of personal focus and discuss the following key points. Focus

  • on your values. Know when you need to “come about” and make course corrections.
  • on specific “aids to navigation.” Learn the 3 aids to navigation that will keep you from going adrift when you have to suddenly change hats.
  • on strength of character. Don’t be afraid to “luff-up!”
  • on influence, not position. Learn 10 Methods of Influence that will set you apart.
  • lifting your boss’s load. Discover 89 specific attributes that will keep you both afloat.
  • developing good habits. Experienced sailors must be disciplined and cultivate habits to bring results.
