Seminar Overview

Learn how to obtain representative samples of crude oil using automatic and manual methods. Learn the test methods available for obtaining the basic data necessary to determine quantity for custody transfer purposes and conformance to expected quality. Fee per person: $795.

Provider: ASTM (American Society for Testing & Materials) $795
Topic(s): Technical/Engineering

Who Should Attend?
Laboratory technicians and chemists; operating field personnel - a minimum of two years of college with emphasis on chemistry or environmental science is highly recommended but not required

Detailed Overview/Outline

How You Will Benefit
With the price of crude oil at record levels, properly conducting analyses of crude oil and reporting data according to established standards is of paramount importance. With this new course from ASTM International, you will learn:

  • How to obtain representative samples of crude oil using automatic and manual methods
  • About the test methods available for obtaining the basic data necessary to determine quantity for custody transfer purposes and conformance to expected quality
  • How to make a rapid evaluation of the commodity for assessing handling and processing characteristics.

Course Outline

DAY 1

  • Complexities of Crude Oil Composition
  • Sampling Protocols
  • Sampling Containers
  • Sample Integrity
  • Sampling Exercise
  • Inspection Analysis (Cursory Assay)
  • Comprehensive Analysis (Full Assay)
  • Laboratory Analysis Exercise

DAY 2

  • Tour of a Petroleum Testing Laboratory or Marine Terminal
  • ASTM Crude Oil Interlaboratory Crosscheck Program (Methods Used, Test Order, Reporting Requirements)
  • Future Needs in Crude Oil Characterization
  • Economic and Environmental Challenges of Heavier, Higher Sulfur Feedstocks
  • Future Analytical Test Method Requirements

Who Should Attend
Laboratory technicians and chemists responsible for the analysis of crude oil samples for quantity and quality purposes; and operating (field) personnel responsible for collecting samples will benefit from a better understanding of how test results are directly dependent on proper sample collection and handling.

Note: A minimum of two years of college with emphasis on chemistry or environmental science is highly recommended but not required. Laboratory work experience is acceptable in lieu of college training. For operating personnel, it will be helpful if you have completed at least one course in petroleum measurement offered by continuing education services such as PETEX and have some field experience.

Sponsor Background:
ASTM, celebrated it's 100th anniversary in 1998, is one of the world's largest voluntary standards development organizations. ASTM standards have grown to be among the world's most widely used and accepted documents. The 81-volume Annual Book of ASTM Standards contains over 12,000 standards written by 34,000 members on our 140 technical committees. These standards and related information are widely used throughout the world as the basis of purchasing and other contracts, codes, laws and regulations. ASTM Committee D-2 on Petroleum Products and Lubricants developed the standard used in this course.

Instructor(s):
HARRY N. GILES, CLIFFORD MILLS

Instructor Background:
HARRY N. GILES, Senior Petroleum Industrial Specialist, U. S. Department of Energy has been employed by the Department of Energy since 1976. Currently, he is manager of crude oil quality programs for the Strategic Petroleum Reserve. He has authored or co-authored articles on crude oil analysis and characterization. Mr. Giles has been actively involved in the work of ASTM Committee D.02 on Petroleum Products and Lubricants for 20 years. He is a member of the Crude Oil Quality Group, APIÆs Committee on Measurement Quality, and IASH, the International Association for Stability, Handling, and Use of Liquid Fuels. Together with his co-instructor Clifford Mills, he is technical advisor to ASTM for their Crude Oil Interlaboratory Crosscheck Program (ILCP).

CLIFFORD MILLS recently retired from ConocoPhillips where he served in numerous capacities and is now a laboratory consultant with an emphasis on crude analysis. Mr. Mills has been involved with ASTM methods development since the early 80Æs. He is presently chairman of the subcommittee on Properties of Fuels, Petroleum Coke and Carbon Products, and he chaired the subcommittee on LP-Gases for several years He has co-authored multiple ASTM methods of analysis. Along with Harry Giles, he serves as the technical advisor to ASTM for the Crude Oil ILCP. Mr. Mills is a member of the Crude Oil Quality Group (COQG) and recently had a paper presented on crude contaminants and analysis requirements. He is also a member of the API Testing Methodologies Workgroup.
