Many couples become conditioned with day-to-day interactions, positive and negative. Most of these interactions are laughed off, others build to arguments, and then some become dangerous. Conditioning often develops from the environment of attitudes and reactions a person is subjected to while growing up. This can result in both admirable traits and adverse carryovers to their own adult relationships. Many individuals enter therapy in a state of despair, hopelessness and helplessness. Oftentimes therapy is a last resort when one person is walking out of the relationship.
Where do you begin? What strategy is best for each couple? How do you establish a therapeutic focus and goal? What should be done when couples fight in the session or when one of them walks out? Do you share the blame when a couple's relationship doesn't work? Is taking sides appropriate? When should another professional be called in?
