Detailed Overview/Outline

Deficits in emotional and social intelligence (ESI) cause a wide range of mental health problems. Discover how to use ESI with clients across a wide range of ages and diagnoses. Help your clients overcome difficulties and achieve positive changes.

Emotional and social intelligence is comprised of abilities that go beyond intellectual competencies and enable us to understand and manage our emotions, control our behavior, accurately interpret the events and situations we experience and interact successfully with others. Research indicates that these capabilities are more important than IQ to overall success in life and that deficits in emotional and social intelligence cause a wide range of mental health problems. Therefore, therapeutic techniques for strengthening these competencies are useful in work with clients across a wide range of ages and diagnoses.

Therapeutic applications of emotional and social intelligence make use of advances in the fields of neuroscience, behavior genetics and positive psychology. Therapists can use basic principles of modern brain research and behavior genetics in their work with clients by grasping a few basic principles (and without memorizing lots of terminology). The new field of positive psychology goes beyond our traditional focus on reducing psychopathology to help people achieve more positive experiences, relationships, personal strengths and well-being.
