Common Wrist and Hand Injuries

Every clinician should understand common wrist and hand injuries and how to treat them. Hand and wrist function is the cornerstone of daily living, recreation and work and sports activities. Whether due to repetitive stress, soft tissue injuries or disease, the therapeutic goal is to get the hand functional and re-establish the range of motion. The intricate balance of the mechanics of the hand and wrist need to be understood for effective treatment and restoration of the patient's quality of life.

The goal of this course is to present the fundamental principles for evaluation and treatment of the wrist and hand. The foundation of the seminar will cover the architectural framework of the wrist and hand. Using this foundation, evaluation strategies will be developed with an emphasis on function. Hand therapy techniques including basic splinting, therapeutic exercises, manual therapy and home therapy programs will be presented. The importance of the home exercise programs in hand therapy cannot be over-emphasized. The carryover necessary to maximize function can only be accomplished with proper home programs. At the end of the seminar, participants will be able to approach their hand patients with a level of confidence necessary for effective treatment.
