Trauma histories in mental health populations are more widespread than most clinicians realize. With recent events such as September 11 and the war in Iraq, PTSD is even more prevalent. PTSD and other trauma-related issues are often not asked about because clinicians may not know the best way to treat trauma or are concerned their client may fall apart if it is talked about. Fortunately, effective treatments for PTSD do exist. Prolonged Exposure therapy (PE), a cognitive behavioral treatment, has demonstrated efficacy in numerous clinical trials. It works well for a wide range of trauma victims including childhood physical and sexual abuse, rape, domestic violence, war trauma, motor vehicle accidents, industrial accidents and severe medical conditions. Despite the proven success of PE, most clinicians have not had the opportunity to learn it.
