Autism is the fastest growing diagnosis of all developmental disabilities. Parents of children with ASD are often isolated as they live with constant stress, uncertainty and trauma that can be difficult for others to comprehend. The grief can be overwhelming as they wonder if their child will ever speak or form relationships. They typically feel confused and overwhelmed by the range of treatments and therapies that are available. Without guidance, parents may drop a small fortune on alternative therapies which produce little results. When guided by a knowledgeable professional, parents have a chance to move toward acceptance, marriages have a chance to survive and the family can bond as a team. Clinicians can facilitate a healthy view of the child as a member of the family system. With tools and structure, a family can begin to appreciate the rewards a child with ASD offers, seeing him as beautiful and lovable despite being very different. With professional support, parents can overcome grief, frustration and hopelessness and learn to celebrate their child's progress.
