Most people suffer from some type of pain on a regular basis. Even sitting at a desk and repeating the same movements day after day can start to cause problems with muscles. Back pain, bad posture, TMJ, muscle cramps and chronic pain are just a few examples of the common complaints heard all the time. Some pain can be caused by an injury, and unless treated with a long-term solution, that pain will return. INMR approach is a synthesis of active and passive approaches to facilitate positive changes in the structure and function of the myofascial and neuromuscular systems, therefore keeping the pain at bay long-term.

Integrated Neuromuscular Re-Education is an introductory hands-on approach to management of neuromusculoskeletal dysfunction, using muscle energy therapy (MET) and counterstrain/positional release therapy (PRT). The goals of INMR are to restore normal soft tissue tone and elasticity, relieve pain, improve strength and optimize performance. Identification and treatment of abnormal neuromuscular tension, muscular restriction and painful tender points is the focus of this course. Techniques may be immediately applied in a variety of clinical situations and are gentle enough to be applied across the lifespan for clients with orthopedic or neuromuscular dysfunction. A must-take course for manual therapists!

WHAT YOU WILL COVER

• Discuss the theoretical basis for positional release/counterstrain and muscle energy therapy
• Assess the musculoskeletal system using palpation scanning to identify indicator tender or trigger points
• Identify positions and postures that reduce the sensitivity of indicator trigger points to allow spontaneous release of abnormal neuromuscular tone about a joint
• Apply positional release techniques/counterstrain to position a client to relieve pain in trigger points
• Discuss the theoretical basis for positional release/counterstrain and muscle energy therapy
• Describe basic neuromuscular reflexes, the function of the muscle spindle and Golgi tendon organs and their effect on muscle tone and function
• Assess the musculoskeletal system using palpation scanning to identify indicator tender or trigger points
• Identify positions and postures that reduce the sensitivity of indicator trigger points to allow spontaneous release of abnormal neuromuscular tone about a joint
• Apply positional release techniques/counterstrain to position a client to relieve pain in trigger points
• Apply principles of muscle energy therapy to position a joint to effectively stretch a muscular restriction
• Utilize proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation techniques of contract-relax and hold-relax muscle energy therapy to increase anatomical range of motion at a restricted joint
• Implement a treatment program using positional release and muscle energy therapy to improve range of motion, flexibility and strength, and to reduce spasm and pain for a variety of clinical conditions

What You Should Bring: Participants are strongly encouraged to bring a portable massage table if they have one, or a mat to lay upon for comfort and safety. Please wear loose comfortable clothing such as t-shirts and loose gym shorts or sweats, to have access to the muscles; absolutely no jeans!
