Introduction to Hand Therapy - Evaluation and Treatment

Seminar Overview

This is a comprehensive, practical, and nonintimidating program designed for the clinician who is interested in pursuing hand therapy or is new to the field. This course takes an indepth look at the management of common upper extremity diagnosis integrating anatomy and pathology with the evaluation and treatment process. Topics covered include static and dynamic splinting, manual therapy, modalities, edema management, sensibility, ROM, home program development and proper documentation. Fee per person: $425; $375 if received 30 days prior to seminar; $325 each for two or more.

Detailed Overview/Outline

This is a comprehensive, practical, and nonintimidating program designed for the clinician who is interested in pursuing hand therapy or is new to the field. This course takes an indepth look at the management of common upper extremity diagnosis integrating anatomy and pathology with the evaluation and treatment process. Topics covered include static and dynamic splinting, manual therapy, modalities, edema management, sensibility, ROM, home program development and proper documentation.

AUDIENCE
This is an introductory level workshop designed for OTs, PTs, ATCs and Assitants.

OBJECTIVES
Course Participants will:

  • 1) Identify the proper procedures for basic upper extremity evaluations including ROM, rapid grip, edema, sensibility, and proper documentation
  • 2) Be able to identify signs and symptoms for a variety of diagnoses related to the upper extremity including nerve compression, DeQuervains, Dupuytren’s Contracture, and Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy.
  • 3) Identify the indications and contra-indications for the use of modalities such as ultrasound, fluidotherapy, whirlpool, paraffin, and iontophoresis.
  • 4) Be able to identify appropriate static and dynamic splints for the treatment of various upper extremity problems including splint wearing schedule, indications, and contra-indications.
  • 5) Be able to select and prioritize treatment options and develop effective home programs to reduce the number of necessary therapy sessions.
  • 6) Identify several techniques to assess the “non-compliant patient”.
  • 7) Be able to identify the “warning signs” of Reflex sympathetic Dystrophy as early interventions may prevent further development of symptoms.

8:30 Upper Extremity Anatomy : bones, joints, ligaments, tendons and nerves.

9:00 Upper Extremity Evaluation: ROM, Motor strength, Sensibility, Edema, Patient’s history, interview

10:45 Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Cubital Tunnel Syndrome ...including evaluation, modalities, splinting, scar management, rehab programs, ergonomic suggestions for work / home

12:00 Lunch (On your own)

1:00 Ligament Instability

  • -Gamekeeper’s Thumb
  • -Volar plate injury (PIP joint)
  • -Collateral ligament tear
  • -Carpal ligament instability & TFCC
  • ...splinting and home exercise program

2:45 Fracture Management and Rehab

  • -Finger (distal, middle, proximal phalanges)
  • -Metacarpal, Carpal, & Radius/Ulna
  • ...splinting, edema control, wound care, precautions, appropriate modalities & strengthening following casting, open reduction, and external fixation techniques.

5:30 Questions and Adjourn

DAY TWO

8:00 Flexor tendon zone repair and rehab s/p tenolysis extensor tendon laceration, repair, and rehab

10:30 Arthritis: Thumb CMC (pre and post)

  • -Rheumatoid Arthritis: management and rehab
  • -Flexor tenosynovitis
  • -Extensor tenosynovitis
  • -Trigger thumb / finger
  • -MP joint arthroplasties (implants)

12:00 Lunch (On your own)

1:00 Dequervains (pre and post)

  • Wrist ganglion
  • Dupuytren’s contracture
  • Infections

2:45 Crush injuries

  • Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy
  • ”The Stiff Hand”
  • Nerve laceration
  • (radial, median, ulnar, and digital nerves)
