Detailed Overview/Outline

Discuss differential diagnosis and treatment of the most common types of dementia, including Alzheimer's disease, management of psychiatric conditions associated with dementia, caregiver issues and legal/ethical challenges.

It is estimated that over five million individuals in the United States suffer from Alzheimer's disease, the most common form of dementia. There are hundreds of thousands more with other forms of dementia, including vascular dementia, dementia with Lewy bodies, frontotemporal dementia and several dozen types associated with various medical conditions. As the age span continues to increase, more and more people are exposed to dementia’s main risk factor -- age. As a result, nearly every clinician who works with patients 50 years or older will encounter the dementia patient. It is critical for clinicians to be able to identify both the presence and type of dementia, since there are many reversible causes and exacerbating factors that must be addressed early in its course.

This seminar will provide the information and diagnostic tools necessary to accomplish these clinical goals. As participants learn how to define and differentiate the various forms of dementia, you will also learn how to decrease the risk of dementia before it occurs, how to manage it once it is diagnosed and how to implement the latest treatment strategies. Associated psychiatric problems will be addressed, along with strategies to help caregivers deal with their own burden and the numerous legal and ethical questions that arise.
