A new American study says that Internet addiction, the compulsive and or obsessive use of the Internet, is on the rise. Through a Stanford University Medical Center random-digit-dialed telephone survey of 2,513 adults in the United States, researchers found that almost 70 percent of the respondents were Internet users and of those, 13.7 percent found it hard to stay away from the Internet for several days at a time. As increasing numbers of youth and adults are finding ways to meet various psychological, social and emotional needs on the Internet, mental health professionals need to pay far more attention to the consequences. Social isolation, sleep deprivation and loss of jobs, family contacts and marriages are resulting from problematic Internet use. Increased desensitization to visual and other sensory bombardment are unhealthy side effects of Internet abuse as well. Health care and educational professionals must be able to identify and intervene once these unhealthy patterns have been recognized. Professionals who are not aware of the impact the Internet can have on an individual's psyche run the risk of not being able to return their patients to a healthy frame of mind.
