Childhood obesity is an issue that faces one third of our children. The long-term effects are damaging to both the physical health as well as the emotional health of children. This is not a problem that will go away on its own. It is one that requires the understanding of what exactly it is and how to make lifelong changes to present lifestyles and habits. It is not an individual effort but a family effort. Traditionally, the eye of childhood obesity has been focused upon intervention rather than upon prevention. Typically, school-based intervention tends to target children between ages 6 and 12, when the greatest increases are seen in the occurrence of obesity. While intervention is important to mediating the long-term effects of obesity, it requires unlearning negative behaviors and attitudes about activity and nutrition. Prevention strategies which target ages 2-13 years are needed to influence children's learning about nutrition and physical activity before unhealthy habits are learned.
