Full Seminar Description
This seminar will examine why power struggles develop, covering developmental issues and expectations, as well as personality clashes and control issues. Attendees will explore how to recognize when they are getting pulled into a power struggle and how to 'throw the hook' to avoid getting suckered in. Participants will contrast effective and ineffective strategies and examine critical components needed to defuse power struggles. Cognitive strategies to help maintain control of emotions and how professionals can develop emotional self-care will also be examined. Special situations (power struggles with adolescents) and case studies focusing on interactions with students, parents and administrators, will extend our knowledge to apply the principles to situations we encounter daily. Just as a fish takes the bait of a skilled fisherman, we often get caught in unproductive communication patterns with students, parents, and administrators, unaware of what is happening or how to stop it. We fight valiantly only to be landed in somebody else's net of influence. In order to help our clients, our students and ourselves, we must understand the root causes of power struggles and find techniques that effectively help us manage negative interactions.
