This course will address three of the most problematic issues that complicate and/or hinder treatment in adults, adolescents and children. These problems are often overlooked in clinics, hospitals, schools and LTC facilities.

One of the biggest obstacles of rehabilitation and education is triggering the client's performance. A solid knowledge base is the key to intervention of any type. We, as clinicians and educators, must be able to identify key factors that inhibit performance, as well as understand the trigger points of intervention. The Gestalt Theory has been well known for its perspective of "The Whole being more than the sum of its Parts." This idea is also well established by another theorist, Gary Kielhofner, who based his theory of Occupational Performance on similar issues. These theoretical views will be utilized to provide educators and health care workers with an extensive knowledge base of foundational concepts from the Occupational Performance Theory.

Current statistics indicate that compliance has become one of our nation's most expensive issues. Our nation has stood watching as we cruised to an all time high drop out rate for students. Likewise, our health care industry has suffered numerous setbacks because of lack of compliance with treatment. Some reports indicate pain and behavior as the two main contenders for lack of compliance across all settings. This program will facilitate a better understanding of the premise that interest, volition and habituation are at the root of many issues associated with compliance. These evidence-based interventions may be applied immediately upon completion of this course and the only equipment needed is adjustment of the "therapeutic use of self."

• Obtain a new level of understanding regarding behavior and the prediction of functional outcomes
• Understand assessment procedures utilized to investigate sensation and perception with related issues of pain and temperature
• Learn to read verbal and nonverbal responses with a higher degree of accuracy to prevent non compliant behaviors
• Investigate assessment procedures and inhibitory factors of pain, behavior and compliance in patients with cognitive impairment
• Learn specific ways to adjust therapeutic use of self through interaction and environmental adjustments
• Examine the neurobiological structures of the human sensory system and its relationship with pain
• Identify the theoretical framework for interest, volition and habituation
• Learn how to initiate treatment from a holistic approach to facilitate the highest level of compliance possible
